In the city centers, the new cultural buildings act as an urban vacuum cleaner. They absorb the residual disorder: (bohemians, artists, schizophrenics, prostitutes, gypsies, photographers, musicians, writers and dealers) and recycle into white buildings. A significant case of this change is the “barrio chino” in Barcelona where the MACBA(1) in the city center with a facade of over-dimensioned white tiles, appears as a monumental bathroom, to clean the irregular shapes apartment and their infestation, people.
The building is heavy, it is huge to scale of the narrow streets of the Barcelona city center, were a have created a void. The building appears as an elephant lost from a circus walking among the narrow streets and destroying the tiny flats when passing through subtracting movement to the area and eating away what was there. Some residents got displaced and other enriched others with and consequential change in character of the area… gentrification.
The square of the MACBA is filled with skate boards…. ¿can the MACBA be that dynamic?
